Life with Cantina Family

Week 1

Saturday 10 August 2019

One of our lovely Cantina customers dropped us an email and asked if they could do a Burpee Challenge in our garden to raise funds for Play Torbay. Play Torbay are a  local charity who run an fabulous holiday workshop with activities every day each of which includes a delicious nutritious meal, helping to reduce holiday hunger. Of course we were delighted to offer up a space in the garden, we also challenged our staff to do some burpees, they were amazing but nothing compared to Clare Williams and Laura Gough who did 1000 burpees each and the Palmer family who did well over 1000 between them. These fabulous ladies raised over £1000 or this project.

Our wonderful friends at Hunts Cider who supply both of our delicious Misty Maid and Ansome Bay ciders were supporting a charity event called Kick the cows out event tonight with a fantastic band called Round Mountain Girls. We made our way to an empty cow shed in Waddeton where raucous dancing and a glass or two cider consumption occurred.

Friday 9 August 2019

Rain, Rain and more rain was the story for today.

We received a fantastic gift from our lovely friend Aaron Kitts who designs all of our stunning uniforms and the labels for Mermaids Ruin. He brought us some screen printed tea towels with the octopus tentacle design as found on the back of our latest staff t-shirts. We are putting these up for sale at £5 each, all of the proceeds will go to the Thrive Project. (The Thrive Project is a community hub ,offering support ,signposting, referrals and companionship) – The thrive Project)

Kate foolishly decided just before on of the extremely heavy showers that now would be a good time to clean the lines in our outside horsebox bar, suffice it to say she wouldn’t have got any wetter if she’d gone swimming in the sea fully dressed.

At 5pm when Kate finished work we caught the bus over to Brixham and visited the very lovely Wine Loft in middle Street. They serve a great selection of wines which you can drink in the shop or buy to take away and they also have a small but perfectly formed selection of delicious Spanish goodies to eat with the wine. Thursday 8 August

The rain has started, next up comes the wind but do we let that defeat us, no we don’t.

Matt Sellors live at cantina

Kate and Barry couldn’t resist taking the boat out and checking the new pots, the delighted hunter gatherers returned proudly displaying their catch, not 1 but 2 lobsters. 1 for me and 1 for Jenny. I dropped mine down to Cantina and Lee and Mark (2 of our fabulous chefs) did their magic and added a little Thai style to the lobster. I shared mine so that I was able to justify having the Duck special, Kate had the other special, gorgeous Sea Bream, we were totally spoilt it was heavenly. All washed down with a bottle of Sharpham Dart Valley reserve and accompanied by Matt Sellors.

A holiday maker who had come in to Cantina 3 years ago just after we opened was visiting and took Kate to one side. He told her he had loved it when he visited the first time but that he loved it even more today. Kate was beaming from ear to ear.

Some of our lovely team including our super apprentices Milly and Beth has the weekend off to celebrate Beths 21st birthday. They headed to Boomtown a music festival in Hampshire. Have a great weekend girls we look forward to hearing all about it.

Wednesday 7 August

The weather for the next few days looks a bit crappy so we made the most of a lovely evening with a walk along the coast path to Churston Manor, delicious pint of Bays Devon Rock for Kate and Barry, Jenn and I shared a yummy bottle of Rose.  While waiting for our drinks Jenny attempted to squeezed herself into a teeny tiny picnic bench.

Tuesday 6 August

Early this summer we acquired a little boat called Cormorant, she’s 16ft and lots of fun. Last week we applied for a licence for 10 crab/lobster pots and today we picked up the first 3 and had great fun out in the Bay dropping the pots. Lovely lunch afterwards at Mollys on Paignton harbourside, delicious prawn sandwich, dressed crab and chips, gorgeous.

Monday 5 August

We were torn about what to do tonight. All summer long it’s Motown Mondays with the awesome Vinyl Avengers down at Cantina with Kate was working and holding the fort. The nights are starting to drawn in (☹) which means the dancing starts earlier, as soon as it’s dimpsy the dancing begins.

But Monday nights is also Haldon Hash House Harriers night and tonights hash was along the coast in Brixham. For those not familiar with hashing it involves running (or walking in my case) between 4-6 miles following trails of flour.

I decided to try for maximum fun tonight which meant a stunning hash along the coast path, then Motown Monday and Pizza at Cantina afterwards. Win Win!!

Sunday 4 August

You may have seen Gig rowing boats out and about in the bay. Gigs have 6 rowers, 3 each side and a cox. Racing boats are made of wood and are all built to the same design based on original Cornish pilot gigs. I row with Paignton Rowing Club and on Sunday was competing over in Brixham at their regatta. We had very successful day rowing with a mens and 2 ladies crews competing. We may not have troubled to top spots in any of our races but it was great to see so many Paignton Rowers having fun out on the water, most of them participating in their first regatta.  Brixham Gig Club really treated us with their catering they were cooking scallops on the harbourside which was impossible for me to resist so I had a portion for my breakfast

A delicious Hake and Chips at Cantina afterwards was the perfect end to a perfect day.

If you’d like to have a go at rowing send us a message and we’ll pass it on to the club
